NACSW - Introduction to K9 Nose Work

This class introduces teams to the K9 Nose Work game while building strong foundation skills for both dog and handler. Handlers will learn observation skills and timing, while dogs develop confidence, focus, and independence in their searching.

Classes begin with dogs searching for food or toys to encourage independent problem-solving and to help handlers learn how to read their dog’s natural searching behavior. This approach ensures that, when odor is introduced later, the dog’s motivation for the game is high and effective teamwork is already established.

The first class of the session is primarily an evaluation and orientation to the game. The remaining classes focus on developing foundational skills that increase the dog’s intensity for searching and help handlers better understand and support their dog’s work. Once teams meet key benchmarks, they are ready to move on to Introduction to K9 Nose Work -Level 2 and then on to Introduction to Odor.

Teams are encouraged to repeat Intro to K9 Nose Work in different locations to further build their dog’s confidence and comfort across a variety of environments.

Schedule: Classes are 6 weeks (please see "Session Notes" for any preplanned skip weeks).  We meet the same day and time each week for 1 hour.

Make Up Classes: There are no make ups for missed days for these classes.

Weather Related Schedule Changes: Please note that in the summer months, we may have to skip unexpectedly due to heat/smoke. Those classes will be added on to the end of your current series.

Requirements:

• Proof of DHPP & Rabies vaccines or current titers

  
  

• Dogs must be comfortable waiting in their vehicle when it is not their turn. Some dogs may need a 2nd human to wait with them to be able to be comfortable while you work on being comfortable waiting alone in the car.
